MUSE®

MUSE® are urethral suppositories used to treat erectile dysfunction.  MUSE® is an acronym that stands for Medical Urethral System for Erection.  The active ingredient is Alprostadil, a vasodilator and is used to increase the blood flow to the penis.

The medication is used by inserting the suppository into the penis immediately after urination.  It goes into the urethral opening or hole where urine and semen come out.  * It takes about 15 minutes to work.

MUSE® has been around for a long time.  It is generally safe to use, but has some possible side effects.  Some of the known side effects of MUSE® include: discomfort on insertion, penile pain, burning sensation, groin pain, bleeding at the tip of the penis, dizziness, urinary tract infection, urethral scarring or strictures, fainting and prolonged erection.

MUSE® should not be used in a man who has had a previous allergic reaction to Alprostadil, has a urethral stricture, sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma or other blood diseases, has a penile implant, uses blood thinners such as warfarin or coumadin, takes some blood pressure medications that might predispose you to dizziness, peyronies disease or penile deformities or penile curvature, infection or inflammation of the penis, and should not be used to have sex with a pregnant woman.

MUSE® is a reasonable choice for a patient with erectile dysfunction, especially if they are not able or willing to use penile injection therapy.  However, many patients prefer to use penile injection therapy as MUSE® is generally more uncomfortable to use, has a higher incidence of urinary tract infection and is less likely to give a man a good solid erection, as compared to penile injection therapy.

* MUSE® is available in most pharmacies, is covered by some insurance plans and costs about $40 per dose.

*  While we will certainly try to help all of our patients, as with any medical treatment, there is no guarantee of specific results, as results can and usually do vary from patient to patient. All numbers, costs of medication and time frames mentioned are approximate and may vary from patient to patient.
