PENIS PUMPS

A penis pump is also called a vacuum pump or a vacuum constriction device (VCD).  It consists of a plastic tube that fits over the penis and a device to get a vacuum and draw blood into the penis to get an erection and a constriction ring to place at the base of the penis to maintain the erection.

A VCD is one option to treat erectile dysfunction.  Some of the pumps are manually operated and some are battery operated.  * They range in price from inexpensive and usually poorly built devices that can be found in sex stores for about $100, to reliable and automatic battery operated devices for around $400.

* A VCD is one of the least expensive ways to treat erectile dysfunction and it is also one of the safest.  If you take care of the device, you will have it for many years.

While penis pumps are quite safe, there are some possible side effects.  Some of the possible side effects of using a VCD include: bruising - especially if you are taking aspirin or blood thinners, petechiae or red dots forming on the skin of the penis, numbness or coldness of the penis while the constriction band is in place, lack of firmness at the base of the penis, pain or discomfort.

The constriction ring is meant to be left on at the base of the penis for no more than 30 minutes at a time.  If a man were to leave it on for a long period of time, it could trap poorly oxygenated blood in the penis which could result in scar tissue and worsening erectile function.  Obviously, a man should not fall asleep with a constriction ring on his penis.

When a man ejaculates while wearing a constriction ring on his penis, the semen does not usually come out the way it normally does.  It may either not come out at all or just dribble out.  For many men, while their orgasm is still pleasurable, this changes the nature and character of their orgasm because there is not the forceful expulsion of semen.

Some men find that a VCD is awkward to use, gives them an unnatural or cold feeling erection, and it may be necessary for some men to shave their pubic hair in order to get the VCD to work properly.

While an adult man of any age can effectively use a penis pump to get an erection, they seem to be better suited for older men or men who have had their prostate gland removed.  Older men and men who have had their prostate removed seem to make much less semen.  The constriction ring being at the base of the penis is then less of a problem with this group of men.

Penis pumps can help most men with erectile dysfunction get an erection that allows vaginal penetration.  Some men get the best results by using a combination of a VCD and some medication for erectile dysfunction.

In spite of what many people think, there is no evidence that penis pumps will make a man's penis bigger or fatter.  This is just not a reason to use a VCD.

All costs of medical equipment and time frames mentioned are approximate and may vary from patient to patient.
