VASCULAR SURGERY FOR ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Vascular reconstructive surgery is performed to improve the blood supply to a man's penis in an attempt to improve his ability to get and maintain a good solid erection.  This surgery is difficult and not often effective and it is performed infrequently.

Surgery of this type to help a man get an erection often involves bypassing blocked arteries by connecting the vessels with poor flow to other arteries that have good flow.

* Vascular surgery for erectile dysfunction is rarely performed on men older than 30 years old. And then only if there is a recent history of trauma or injury to the man's penis or pelvis.

If the surgery is performed on a young man with a recent injury and with a single damaged blood vessel, the surgery is often effective.

Men who have diffuse vascular damage from diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking cigarettes, or having high cholesterol, are not candidates for vascular reconstructive surgery for erectile dysfunction.

Sometimes the vascular problem is with the veins and not the arteries that supply a man's penis.  This is called venous leakage.  In venous leakage a man has a good amount of arterial blood flow coming into the penis, but it keeps leaking out into his veins.  The procedure to treat venous leakage is called venous ligation surgery, and is infrequently performed and has an uncertain success rate.  The success rate is higher if the patient is young and has traumatic or congenital venous leakage.

If a man is considering vascular reconstructive surgery to help his erectile dysfunction, it is important that he consult a vascular surgeon who performs these types of procedures on a regular basis.  Fortunately, there are several excellent vascular surgeons in the New York metropolitan area.
