LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS

These may be obvious to some, but they are extremely important.  For some men, these changes can make the difference between a long, healthy and prosperous life or not being around to walk your daughter down the aisle.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS - WHEN YOU WANT TO EFFECT CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE - YOU WILL

Stop Smoking - smoking cigarettes causes heart disease, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, erectile dysfunction, oral cancer, bad breath, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and of course lung cancer.  Smoking causes the need for the amputation of toes, feet and legs as well as fingers and hands.  Smoking is expensive, is harmful to those around you and decreases your productivity at work.  Smokers are sick much more often than non-smokers.  Stopping is not easy, but would be the single most important health decesion of your life.  Please go to our smoking cessation page for more information on how we can help you stop smoking.

Obesity - Excessive body fat is extremely unhealthy and has a higher risk of morbidity and mortality.  Eating less is very difficult, because eating is enjoyable.  People love to eat.  The problem is that many people live to eat instead of eating to live.  The easiest and most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat a little less and exercise more.  It really is that simple.  Please see our weight reduction page for more information about obesity and weight reduction.  Caloric restriction has been shown to increase the lifespan of some animals.

Regular Exercise - Exercising is just as important as not eating too much.  Frequent aerobic exercise keeps your muscles strong, your blood vessels flexible and unclogged, your heart healthy and is terrific for your state of mind.  Men who exercise are happier, stronger, better lovers, more productive at work and will most likely live longer.

Alcohol Consumption - Many studies have shown that the moderate consumption of alcohol is healthy for a man's cardiovascular system and heart.  Moderate consumption means 1-2 drinks about 5 times a week.  Moderate alcohol consumption is thought to raise your HDL or good cholesterol level.  More than 2 drinks a day however, is too much.  And too much alcohol is much worse than no alcohol at all.  Excessive alcohol consumption causes cirrhosis of the liver, neurological problems, obesity, nutritional disorders, decreased productivity and marital problems.  Stopping the excessive consumption of alcohol is not easy, but will undoubtedly change your life.  Alcoholics Anonymous or AA is an excellent resource for men who wish to get a drinking problem under control.

Illegal Drug Use - The use of illegal drugs has been rising in the United States for many years.  Cocaine, narcotics and amphetamines all cause erectile dysfunction, cardiovascular damage, heart attacks and strokes.  Men who use these drugs on a regular basis have an extremely high rate of premature death from vascular disease, violent crime and accidents.  Stopping the use of illegal drugs is not easy, but is necessary if you want to live a normal lifespan.  We would be pleased to recommend an appropriate drug treatment facility for your consideration.

Unsafe Sexual Activity - While most men understand the risks of high risk unprotected sex, many do not act appropriately.  Most men get HIV or AIDS from having unprotected sex with other men, but they can also get it from a woman.  Let's not forget about syphilis, gonorrhea, chylimidia and herpes.  While these will rarely kill a man, they can change his life forever.  Safe sex is very simple - use a condom.  A condom is not perfect, but it is pretty close.  It would also be a good idea to avoid high risk sex in the first place.  Many men have themselves and their partner checked for STD's before engaging in sexual activity.  Better safe than sorry.

Reckless Driving - Men typically drive faster and more aggressively than women.  Accidents happen to even the safest drivers.  But good and careful drivers are in less accidents and sustain less severe injuries when they do.  Always wear your safety belt and make sure that all of your passengers do the same.   Don't drink and drive.  Don't rush when you are in a hurry.  Don't talk on your cell phone or text someone while driving.  Don't speed.

Occupational Exposures to Toxins and Stress - Some jobs are just dangerous.  Working with tigers or poisonous snakes is not a great idea for most people.  Neither is manufacturing pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins.  Maybe your boss always screams at you and is abusive.  If you can find other work and you are in a dangerous profession, do so.  If you live near a toxic landfill, move.  If your boss is always in your face, find another job.  Everyone likes to earn a good living and have job security.  However, life is short and precious - so make sure you and your family are number one and act and live accordingly.
